The hip is a large ball and socket joint designed to withstand a fair amount of wear and tear via repeated motion. However, this doesn’t mean that it is indestructible or injury proof. For example when you go for a run, bicycling, climbing the stairs or even with prolonged standing can cause repetitive stress or overuse injury to the hip. In particular, these risk factors are associated with hip bursitis.

Now you may be wondering what this hip bursitis is, right? Well in order to understand it, we need to define bursae, which are small jelly-like sacs that are located throughout the body. These bursae contain a small amount of fluid and are strategically positioned within the body between bones and soft tissues to actually act as cushions to reduce friction. This allows for fluid movement of our hips. The trouble arises when the bursa becomes inflamed, in particular the one that covers the bony point of the hip bone, leading to trochanteric bursitis of the hip.

Common symptoms of trochanteric bursitis is pain at the point of the hip extending down to the thigh.

Previously physicians have been using cortisone injections to battle trochanteric bursitis, however new research reveals that platelet plasma therapy is more effective to treat individuals ailing from this condition. A trial consisted of 40 patients that were divided into two groups, one receiving a cortisone injection and the other platelet rich plasma therapy. The individuals were followed up with after 1 year post treatment and the results showed the the individuals that received the cortisone injection were back at pre-treatment levels, meaning that their pain had returned in their hip(s). On the other hand, the individuals whom underwent platelet plasma therapy continued to show diminished pain in their hip(s) 1 year post treatment!
